Herb of choice for Inflammatory Conditions such as Muscle and Joint Pain

This healing herb is known as Devil’s Claw or “harpargo” its Botanical name, a Greek word meaning “grapple hook”. This herb bears fruit in the shape of a drupaceous capsule which has a woody inner part surrounded by a fleshy layer. It splits into two curve-like “claws” or hooks which give name to this plant.

These “claws” can be quite a menace for animals and hikers as the hooks can become entangled in an animal’s fur or into a hiker’s clothing and it takes some time to “ungrapple” oneself.

Devil’s Claw has taproots which produce secondary roots called “tubers”. These tubers are dried and this is the part of the plant which is used for herbal medicine. These tubers contain a group of chemicals called iridoids that contain the active ingredients harpagoside and beta sitosterol which are known to have an anti-inflammatory and analgesic effect as well as diuretic properties. It is also rich in flavanoids and phenolic acid.
