“This herb is very valuable in the treatment of mild to moderate states of depression, it is also helpful in cases of severe energy loss after operations and helps in improving Libido ….”

The next herb in the A-Z of Herbs series is DAMIANA. Ancient Mayan, Aztec and Indian Civilizations used this herb as a traditional aphrodisiac. Damiana is still used today as a herbal tonic and an aphrodisiac.

Damiana is a very valuable herb used for the treatment of depression, relief of stress and improving libido.

Damiana’s botanical name is Turnera diffusa or Turnera aphrodisiaca. It is a small woody shrub with many stems and has aromatic leaves. It bears bright yellow flowers in the summer and then is followed by small fruits with a sweet aroma. It loves hot and humid conditions and is native to Mexico, Central and South America.

Herbalists find Damiana very valuable in the treatment of mild to moderate states of depression and it is also helpful in cases of severe energy loss after operations or as an overall tonic for people who have had many years of hard, manual work or exertion.

The tonic helps to strengthen, tone and balance the central nervous system, and overall bodily functions.

The herbal properties of Damiana are described as anti-depressant; thymoleptic – which is a life enhancing and stimulative action; mild purgative and aphrodisiac.

Due to these therapeutic properties other conditions helped by taking Damiana are:

  • Anxiety

  • Stress

  • Nervous tension

  • Listlessness

  • Sexual inadequacies and low libido – it provides oxygen to the genital area

  • Eases constipation as it stimulates the intestinal tract

  • Improves Digestion

  • Urinary Tract Infections

Damiana is my herb of choice for the Relief of Stress and Improving Libido!

The leaves of the Damiana plant are harvested in the summer when it is in bloom and when the leaves have been dried they are used as a tea or made into a liquid herbal extract; or ground and placed into capsules or made into herbal tablets.

Damiana contains essential oil, tannins, flavonoids, alkaloids and herbal resin.

Other uses for Damiana is as a food additive/flavouring in alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages like liqueurs, sweets and baked goods, frozen dairy desserts, gelatins and puddings.
