The A-Z of Herbs continues and we will be discussing a herb that was known in Ancient Egypt as a “Sacred Gift from Ra, the Sun God” and honoured above all other herbs. They also used it as a main herb in embalming oil.
This Sacred Herb is Chamomile and is a flowering plant related to the daisy. It is known by other names such as, Anthemis nobilis or Roman Chamomile, Matricaria chamomilla or German Chamomile, True Chamomile, Hungarian Chamomile.
Chamomile has been used medicinally and cosmetically in different cultures since before 1550 BC. The Ancient Greeks gave Chamomile its name which came from 2 words “chamos” and melos” meaning ground apple, as it is a low growing plant with the aroma of apples. During the Middle Ages it was known by the Anglo Saxons as
“Maythen” and was listed by them as one of the Nine Sacred Herbs. It was used also during this time for love lotions and liquors due to its relaxing and sedative qualities.
