This important herb has immune enhancing, antibacterial, antibiotic and anti-viral properties and contains antioxidants, which protect our cells against free radical damage.

Different Cultures have their own style of Herbalism.  The three that I have studied and use extensively at the Centre are The Indian Herbal Medicine known as Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine Herbalism.  All three are very ancient and the unique herbal preparations have been known to prove therapeutic values for thousands of years.

The herb for this week is ASTRAGALUS, and is one of the most important herbs used in Traditional Chinese Medicine, known as HUANG QI.  It is native to China and Asia and there are thought to be over 2,000 varieties of Astragalus, however only 2 species, Astragalus membranaceus and Astragalus mongholicus are used for health.

Astragalus, a perennial plant, takes approximately 4 years to mature and then its yellowy root (pictured), which is the medicinal part, is harvested in autumn, after flowering.  The herb is then used in teas, extracts, and soups or in tablet form, often combined with Ginseng.

This important herb has immune enhancing, antibacterial, antibiotic and anti-viral properties and contains antioxidants, which protect our cells against free radical damage.

Here’s why Astragalus is such an Important Herb. The potential benefits are:

  • Balancing the Immune System.
  • Energy Tonic – improves the body after infections, surgery and/or after long term disease processes.
  • Relieves Night Sweats associated with infections and viruses.
  • May help protect the body against Diabetes.
  • Helps Protect the Liver and or Kidneys
  • Assisting Chronic Fatigue Sufferers
  • Alleviates Allergies

Astragalus is my herb of choice for the Immune System.

Also research is being undertaken for its effectiveness as an additional treatment for patients suffering from cancer. Taking Astragalus is showing positive signs in speeding up the recovery process and extending life expectancy of cancer patients after chemotherapy or radiation therapy.

Astragalus is also widely used in Ayurvedic Medicine in promoting the healing of injuries and wounds, increasing lung capacity and energy levels, improving metabolism, assisting digestive problems, and relieving kidney conditions.

Remember Herbs should always be prescribed by a Qualified Herbalist.
